WEEKLY COACHING TIP
# 109
CLUB
TERROR!
I
was reading a book the other day on entrepreneurs and I was struck by one of
the titles in the book "Club Terror"! Basically the author was
saying that entrepreneurs know fear, really live with it and then conquer it.
The feeling of elation is amazing when they come through despite the odds!
This is something the true entrepreneur finds irresistible.
For
most people, the emotional high that Club Terror offers is just too great a
price tag. "We don't have what it takes to sustain our membership
for that club so we never join or we just 'drop in' quickly! Consequently, we
never experience the terror OR the high.
So
what can we learn from successful entrepreneurs in our own lives, especially
when we have a goal we would just love to achieve, but find ourselves wavering
about whether to join Club Terror or not!
Well
actually, it's exactly the same as for any personal goal, whether it be asking
that man/woman you really fancy out on a date and risking REJECTION!
Real terror for some people, OR, putting everything you own on the line for a
business idea. Let's look at what qualities make you a successful
entrepreneur in your life.
According
to the book you must be able to:
- embrace
failure
- reject
money as your goal
- exhibit
a dogged determination
- sacrifice
your personal life
- believe
passionately in your vision
Let's
use the example of wanting to be more successful with the opposite sex using
the above points.
-
Embrace
failure - Ask every woman/man that you fancy out/to dance/have a coffee,
whatever, and know it's just a 'numbers' game, you are practicing, so there
can't be failure as such.
-
Reject
money as your goal - If you have your heart set on a certain person, keep
trying different methods, however, remember they are not the 'be all and end
all'.
-
Exhibit
a dogged determination - Use persistence and creativity, on all the
people you fancy, it's guaranteed you will get better at it because your
confidence will grow. Every situation that presents itself is an opportunity
for you to practice.
-
Sacrifice
your personal life - Pay no attention to your 'friends' who tell you not to
make a fool of yourself/you look stupid/ why don't you give up/it'll never
work, etc. These friends may have to take a 'back seat' for a while,
possibly permanently, when they start to see you becoming more and more
successful in this field.
Just
to illustrate further, we have a friend from Sweden, I think he would agree
that he isn't the most attractive man on the planet, he is, however,
persistent. When he was living in London, he started writing, for a very
short while, to a pen friend in Romania. After a few weeks of writing
and asking her to come over, he finally said if she wouldn't come here he
would go there. In the end, she accepted, and came to London. When he
saw her in the flesh she was even more attractive than her photo and she spoke
3 languages fluently, was a pharmacist and extremely out-going. On the
evening of the first day he proposed to her!
On
the evening of the second day she accepted. When I asked them both how
they could do this so soon, when they barely knew each other, they just said
it felt right. The girl told me that she was also so 'blown away' by his
forthrightness that she actually found it very attractive. Anyway they
got married, that was three years ago and now they both live in Sweden and are
extremely happy. So there you go, as my dad always says "shy bairns
get nowt", roughly translated "you don't get anything if you don't
ask"!
So
this week why not act like an entrepreneur about some situation in your life,
whatever it is. If you don't, you might never find that high that
Club Terror offers, that great reward that could be yours, and even if it
doesn't work out the first time, you would have conquered a fear and learned a
little bit more, so it's never as fearful next time when you try it
out.
Good
luck!
Until next week Onwards and Upwards and have
a TERRORable week!
