EXPLORING
THE POWER OF YOUR MIND
Episode 2: Driving lessons for your Brain
Last week we saw that each of the 4 types of brain rhythm corresponds to a
different state of consciousness
It should now be clear to you that each one has an important role to play.
- Delta (deep sleep): rejuvenation
- Theta (light sleep & drowsiness): dream, relaxation
- Alpha (wakefulness): intuition, creativity
- Beta (mental focus): concentration
No one is more important, we need each of these state to be balanced.
Take the metaphor of driving a car, you will need all the gears, switching
according to the situation.
If one gear doesn't work (or if you don't use it) it won't be as efficient and
the gearbox will wear out more quickly.
Similarly, problems will arise if we are unable to turn on the type of brain
wave we need at the time.
For example, an inability to turn on Delta and Theta will cause sleep
disorder.
Now let's take an example in our modern lifestyle:
You are sleeping deeply (Delta). Suddenly the alarm clock rings, you have to
run around and think about what you have to do today (Beta).
The temptation may be high to dose (Theta) - now you know why your body wants
to - but you can't or you'll be late, so let's have some coffee to stay
awake.
At the end of a stressful day - where you spent most of your time in ... of
course, Beta - you come back home exhausted and once you manage to turn
your brain off, go straight to deep sleep (Delta).
That is why many people alternate between Delta and Alpha. Imagine driving a
car switching between fourth and first gear...
And we wonder why we experience anxiety, stress related disease and weak
immune systems.
I'm sure you now understand why you sometimes awake feeling refreshed and
sometime like a zombie, or why a little dose during the day makes you feel so
refreshed.
One of my friends always says that when he can't find an answer or inspiration
for something, all he needs to do is go to the toilet, but we won't go into
that right now!
Chances are he will experience some seconds of Alpha state that will
bring him the insight he needs. (Showering has a similar effect)!
What is your own way of unwinding? How do you relax during the day?
What benefit does it bring?
If you wish, try the following:
- Every day find some time to stay quiet for a while.
- Lie down flat on the floor if you can. Allow yourself 5, 10 or 15
minutes.
- Do not deliberately 'try' to relax just be. You can bet that you will
experience some theta and alpha state
-
Don't worry about oversleeping, just program your mind on how long you want to
dose for.
-
With some training you may also be able to wake up in the morning at the time
you want.
-
After all, when we have to wake up at 5 am to catch a flight
isn't funny how we wake up just before the alarm goes off?
-
Although we need all the range of brain frequencies, Alpha seems to be the
more elusive state, but it is also the most fascinating, the one associated
with peak performance and flow state.
Great athletes and sports people will reach this state just before their best
shot/throw/stroke. Great minds throughout history such as Leonardo da
Vinci, Einstein, Thomas Edison, have accessed this state at will. You can too,
find out how next week.
Have you got any suggestions (or intuition) on how to get there? If so please
send them to me.
