WEEKLY COACHING TIP #143
VALUES AT WORK
Recently I have been very busy designing the
Stretch Your Mind, Stretch Your Body
course for France and have been devising exercises around values, beliefs and
rules, amongst many others. It never ceases to amaze me how important these
areas are and how little attention most people give to them, if they are even
aware of them at all.
Talking to a friend of mine, also a coach, she agreed with me and before she
could say Core Values, somehow, she was roped into writing this weeks tip,
which I greatly appreciate at the moment. So todays tip comes from
Sheree Owen.
About thinking a few points, did you know that:
How what
we think about what we do, what we
have done and are about to do influences our state (emotions) and
the results we will achieve
Thinking and
becoming consciously aware of and learning to challenge your thoughts is one of
the most powerful tools available that you have within your head.
That the
downside of negative thinking is de-motivation, self criticism, comparison,
personalising problems and attributing them to others ( so lessening our power
to change or resolve them)
Our internal
HEAD talk (chat) drives our response to what we do or dont do in situations,
meetings, relationships etc and so creates our results in life and work
How what
we think about what we do, what we
have done and are about to do influences our state and the results we will
achieve
Identity, Motivation & Values - What is important to you about work

What, for you, are the
reasons why you work? (List

What does having
a job do for you? (list 3 )
-
What does having
your present job do for you? (list

-
What does your present job
not provide you with (enough of)?
-
What can you do about
that, how can you provide that for yourself?
This is about Values- what is important to us in key areas of life and work,
Values are often unconscious that is we dont always know what our values are
unless we stop
and think about what we are doing and why.
At work it is important that certain personal values are met through what we do
professionally they contribute to our sense of identity.
When work is one of our primary focuses, and we are happy and satisfied, because
our contribution is recognised, we belong and professional satisfaction needs
are being met we get the most from what we do.
When we are not content in our work, it can be due to a values conflict, some
key personal values that we need to be content in what we do are not being met,
so we feel our Life and work are out of balance.
We may need to expand our focus in life and look for other things to stimulate
or inspire us, rather than look for other people to change or do things
differently, particularly at work, in our career. Not being content is also a
reminder that we perhaps need to change in some way and consider if we would be
better off working for a company whose values are more aligned with our own at
this point in time.
Balance Life and Work goals
We
all need to have goals and desires to aim for in life as well as in work,
however when we work for an organisation, it too has its values about what is
important in the workplace in order to be a successful business.
Ideally in work our work values will align with the organisation we work for.
How aligned would you say your values are with your company values?
(to be
continued)
Until next week
Onwards and Upwards.
