WEEKLY COACHING TIP #144
VALUES AT
WORK (Part 2)
After
last weeks introduction
here is the 2nd part of Sheree Owens tip to really
dig into your Values at Work
Exercise 1: About Your Work
1.
List 5 things you find positive about your job and the company you
work for
2.
List 5 things you find frustrating or irritating about your job,
people you work with
3.
List 5 strengths in relation to your work-what you are really good
at
4.
List 3 areas that you would define as areas for improvement for
you at work
(May be related to
things you dont like doing, or where you want to get better results)
5.
Which one area from section 4
if improved or changed in some way would make the most difference for you at
work
6.
Why?
7.
What steps can you take to improve that area?
8.
Summarise the benefits of making that change/improvement
For yourself
For your colleagues
For anyone else involved
Exercise 2: About Your Motivation
How do you de motivate yourself?
9.
What do you say to yourself when faced with challenges and
difficult situations?
-
Do you rise to the
challenge and think about how can I do this? How would I do this? Or how
would x do this? And get a plan together?
-
Or do you think I
give up and cant be bothered, if so and so did x there wouldnt be a problem
anyway. (shifts responsibility away from you)
10.
How much responsibility are you prepared to take for what happens
in your life and work?
11.
When did you last de-motivate yourself?
12.
How did you do that and why?
13.
Was there a benefit of not being motivated?
Summary
Often our work is
tied up with our sense of identity about who we are as a person.
We can put too much
energy into trying to get our emotional needs met at work by others, (who cannot
do that for us,) we have to be able to meet our own needs first.
Understanding that in
the world of work, it is useful to remember to be professional, first in our
encounters and communication with people in the workplace, particularly dealing
with conflict or potentially difficult people, interactions or situations.

Well I hope this tip
has made you think a little deeper about your values and motivation at work and
how you can perhaps feel more empowered in your work.
Until next week
Onwards and Upwards.
