WEEKLY COACHING TIP #168
WHAT IF
In acting, we often use what ifs, when trying to work on a character,
especially if the character is not one that you can easily relate to. So for
instance we might be playing a character that is plotting to kill someone. In
our personal psyche that is just too much for us and we find it difficult to go
there. So an example of a what if, in this case might be, What if this
person was going to kill your child. What would you do then, would it be easier
to kill this person then? Suddenly theres a shift, finding the right
emotional response in ourselves can help us to imagine and tap into the part of
ourselves that could do this terrible deed. What in fact weve done, is just
opened up the possibility of living truthfully in this character so you can
believe s/he would do certain things. There has to be an empathy even with the
vilest of characters in order for you to be to play it truthfully.
I was thinking about this today as I was on my way to the gym. My thoughts were
rambling around in my head with no real focus, just generally thinking about
properties, as we are looking at the moment to move. I found myself in a loop
of thinking which wasnt useful, creative or inspiring, in fact, it was a
complete waste of time. When I realised this, I actually asked myself Well
what if we dont find the right property in the next few weeks/months or even
years. The answer to this was Fine, we actually really like living where we
are right now anyway, so it wouldnt be a great hardship. Also it would take a
lot of hassle out of our lives right now too. In an instant I was in to a
different way of thinking and I felt not only relieved but also peaceful as I
let go of it.
What ifs can be very powerful, believe me. So today, what if you applied it
to your thinking, especially about everyday, uninteresting or stressful things
and also really good feeling topics that make you smile and tingle. Heres a
few to get you going, add your own, get creative.
What if I decided always to like myself and be kind to me?
What if I let go of competition and just did the best I could at any given
time?
What if I smiled at every single person today?
What if I encouraged all my colleagues and friends in any way I could?
What if I chose to have an outstanding day today?
What if I gave appreciation for everything I have in my life?
What if I was in a hospice now, reviewing my life, what would I never have let
bother me if I were to live it over?
What ifI jumped in all of lifes puddles instead of pussy footing around them?
What ifI remembered being judged is nothing to do with me, its to do with the
judger?
What ifI pretended I was a child again and hadnt learned to put a curb on my
imagination?
WHAT IF YOU AND I JOINED OUR ENERGY TOGETHER AND SENT OUT AS MUCH LOVE AND PEACE
FROM HEARTS TO EVERYONE IN THE WORLD?
See how far you can extend this list, take it into every life area,
relationships, work, money, health, habitat, spiritual, environment.
Onwards and upwards and what if you choose to laugh at lot this week?
