WEEKLY COACHING TIP #172
BE YOUR OWN COACH WHEN YOU ARE STUCK
Have you ever set yourself a goal only to find yourself stuck and not really
know why? This can be so frustrating and if you are not working with a coach,
its very easy to give up and not bother. Actually, sometimes all that is
needed is to ask the right questions, to help you get unstuck. I thought today
you could be your own internal coach and have at the ready some useful questions
that may be able to help you move forward on any goals you may have given up on
or feel stuck on. The following are some of the reasons that people get stuck
or give up.
The goal is not a clear enough expression of the client's true values. So if you
really wanted to be a sports coach for instance and you managed to get into the
arena of coaching and then got promoted to writing articles, you may find that
your true value e.g. connection to people, is no longer being expressed because
you are stuck in an office with a computer.
Nearly all goals come back to values either being aligned or being in conflict
with something. Then sometimes what can happen is the body kind of shuts down
becomes lethargic because the mind and body are not in harmony with what is
really wanted.
Some questions I may ask a client are the following, use them to ask yourself,
as your own coach and see if you get any insights or shifts:
-
Do you know why you're stuck?
-
If you put this goal on the back burner is there anything else youd like to
work on instead?
-
How did you feel when you answered that question: relieved, frustrated,
excited about something else?
-
In the past have you ever got stuck when you got quite close to reaching a
goal?
-
Do you need more support (from your coach or self), or would a kick up the
rear be more beneficial?
-
Tell me what I should do in order to unstick you in the next 15 minutes?
-
How long are you willing to be stuck on this?
-
Do you want to try a more creative/different approach to reaching this goal?
-
What else should we try?
Bear in mind this goal just may not be the right goal for you at this time.
If
you dont get a shift or an insight straight away, dont worry, sleep on it.
Your mind would have gone on an unconscious search for an answer; remember it
takes a day or two to process sometimes.
If
after a couple of days your energy hasnt shifted so you feel excited and
motivated about going for this goal or taking another approach to it, drop it,
its not right at this time. If a goal is really worth it then you must give it
some time and be creative around achieving it. Working with a coach will help
you to do that, however, if you cant coach yourself or get a friend to ask the
questions, its amazing when you hear the questions from someone else how it can
really help you find the solution.
Have a great week.
